Upgrading my G1

I remember waiting for what seemed like an eternity to purchase a Linux based cell phone. I was stuck on T-Mobile's network with the T-Mobile Wing which, for it's time, was a decent Window's based cell phone.

When the G1, the first Android based cell phone hit the market, I was one of the first to pre-order the phone. Not only did it have a keyboard, but it was Linux based and built upon an open source operating system called Android.

U.S. Government to Explicitly Allow iPhone Jailbreaking

Doing what you want with your own device? Us Android people have been doing that for a while. I've been running Cyanogen mod on my 2 year old G1, adding features TMobile refuses to add. I have an option that I can check that allows installation of packages outside of the market.

So it doesn't violate copyright, but it doesn't stop Apple from breaking rooted devices during updates. That type of legislation would, in my opinion, be overstepping the governments bounds.

HP dv4150us and Ubuntu

Just thought I'd mention the Hewlett Packard dv4150us works perfectly with Ubuntu 10.04.

IE as part of the operating system

http://ostatic.com/blog/can-internet-explorer-9-put-microsoft-in-the-bro...

"By using more of the underlying operating system, and taking advantage of the power of the whole PC, IE9 enables developers to do more with HTML5. Running through Windows, instead of just on Windows, makes a big difference; the web runs more like a native application."

Am I missing something? Didn't Microsoft try this type of integration with the OS? And isn't that type of integration a major security issue with Windows?

My opinion

"I'd sue based on _my_ reading of it, but hey, while my opinion is obviously always correct, I recognize that I live in a world where not everybody else always sees that."

Log lots

Categories:

Use lots, and lots, and lots of logging. There are few things more painful than having something break, and not being able to find out why. This is a major difference between Linux and Windows, and in general, the programs written for each.

Simplicity rules the web

Categories:

Few can possibly deny that simplicity rules the internet. The most popular websites for particular categories are, invariably simplistic and clean. Craigslist, Facebook (which overtook the cluttered MySpace), Twitter (which I think is more popular than Facebook), and Google are all examples of this principal in action.

In fact the entire Web 2.0 revolution and look is built on simplicity. Less form fields and buttons, ajax, and fewer clicks all feed this school of thought.

Apple bans third party advertisement and analytics from apps

Categories:

From CNet technology news, Apple changes the terms of it's developer aggreement to prohibit developers from using advertising in their applications that shares analytic data with "an advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple."

This should give a boost to Android.
